“Talking Cock”.

This is one subject matter that I, normally, shun.

A case of “Grandfather has his story and Grandma has her own” – to use a Chinese saying here.

“Everyone got an opinion” is the more familiar expression.

Especially when it comes to origins, concepts and principles of the different style of kung fu.

Every discussion I had with Por Suk (Hay Bun Opera Wing Chun’s Grand Master), we touched on this and his stand is consistently “no one can say with certainty”.

I really don’t wish to revisit this topic except to say to folks who think that “modern” “scientific” methods are superior to our ancestors’….

Yes, new equipments, medicine and yada yada are great; I am not arguing that barring that in the dimension of real fighting, one key factor that our ancestors had far overshadows our circumstances.

The background – how many of us train to fight for real, with bare hands and weapons against opponents who are out to maim or kill you?

Life or death or protection of limbs, day in and day out, how many?

No, performances and competitions don’t really count.

Talk to old folks who really fought in the old country and maybe, maybe you’ll see things in a different light.

Let’s get real – what we are doing is, in Por Suk’s words, “farn farn” or “play play”.

So quit quarrelling until you turn blue in the face.

The Chinese also say “He who is victorious is king”.

Folks, a reminder, victory here is not “mouth” victory…….

In Singapore we call them “talk cock king”.

NOT SAY I SAY WHAT! (click here for translation of that Singlish phrase).
