Yellow Forest.

July 25, 2009

Now that Emei has been thrust into the limelight, by some school of thoughts, that it might have something to do with Wing Chun, I was thinking some of you might like more info about Emei related Kung Fu.

Got here a Sichuan style, Huang Lin or Yellow Forest, which is classified as an Emei style.

When I first came across this, I got really excited; I thought this might be connected to “Huang San” or “Wong San” in Cantonese.

Wong San Pai is one of the styles that Sijo Lee Kwon of Singapore/Malaysia Chow Gar (Zhou Jia) studied.

I have hardly any info regarding Wong San …..

But Wong San and Huang Lin or Wong Lum (in Cantonese) apparently bears no relationship.

Arrrrgghh, the search continues ……

CCTV Cha Quan.

July 25, 2009

If you go to my “Tan Tui” CCTV clips over on youtube, you’ll find someone leaving a question asking for “Cha Quan”……

Ooookay, got a few things to say here:-

  • Yes, I do have the complete CCTV TCMA series with me. Need a little time to get around to posting them on youtube.
  • I, absolutely, love these series; well researched and more outstandingly, genuine verifiable descendents of the various styles are consulted during the production. And in almost all the styles, the production crew visited the actual historical sites and referred to classical texts handed down thru the families; many I am sure are shown publicly for the first time.
  • I, for one, don’t give much credence to many of the so-called modern “historians” who are spinning and making up stories to sell books they write. And when confronted with these unarguable accounts from the true descendants, all sorts of arguments are thrown in just to cover their “forgeries”.
  • These last few years, working with families in SE Asia, I discovered how much distortions have been disseminated by irresponsible parties all in the name of making themselves more marketable without any thoughts of the damages they are inflicting to the many families trying hard to keep their lineages accurate.

To quote an American who is greatly admired the world over:-

You can fool some of the people all of the time, and all of the people some of the time, but you can not fool all of the people all of the time.

We say in Chinese; paper cannot wrap fire.

Back to “Cha Quan” – this style, unjustly, got some bad press because of some involvements during the early day of “modern” Wushu.

Watch all the 4 parts and you’ll find that, historically, this is one battle-proven style that survived the test of time.

Generally associated with the Moslems in China and for good reasons too; the art is imported from the Middle East from what is modern days’ Iran.

And I did not know that they got a “female” version sub-style …….

Enjoy.
